Salt pearls from the waters of Djibouti's Lake Assal, the saltiest lake in the world.
Lake Assal, located between Ethiopia, Eritrea and Somalia in Djibouti, lies 150m below sea level in the Afar Depression, making it the lowest lake on the African continent. With 350g of minerals per liter (10 times more than in the sea), this lake is known to be the saltiest in the world.
Intense evaporation causes salt to deposit extremely rapidly on the lake's shores, like an ice floe, and the effect of currents and waves forms salt balls of varying sizes (from a few millimetres to several centimetres).
