Description
Further information

A species of orchid cultivated for its pods, bourbon vanilla has long had its place in the world of flavors. Our vanilla is prepared and refined in the SAVA region.

The beans are of excellent quality and have the characteristic vanilla aroma. No additives are added. Our organic vanilla is harvested by growers who own their own plantations in the protected areas of Loky Manambato in northern Madagascar and Pointe à Larrée in the Analanjirofo region of eastern Madagascar.

With 126 species spread over three continents (Africa, America and Asia), the Vanilla genus loves warm, humid climates. Three species are cultivated and marketed on a large scale, one of which, the Planifolia vanilla from Central America, accounts for 95% of the world vanilla market. Pompona vanilla, grown in the West Indies, is recognized by its short stature and fleshy appearance. Tahitensis vanilla, grown in Tahiti, with its intense, slightly aniseed flavour, accounts for just 2% of the trade.

History of vanilla

The word vanilla comes from the Spanish vainilla (from the Latin vagina (pod)). These aromatic orchids were discovered by the Spanish in the early 16th century by Hernan Cortes on the coast of Mexico. Vanilla was used by emperors to subtly flavor chocolate, a beverage which at the time was supposed to have aphrodisiac virtues. The trade in chocolate and vanilla could begin.
