A little history:
The ancestors of squash, wild gourds, seem to have originated in Central America, between Mexico and Guatemala. They then spread to North and South America. The fruits, especially the seeds, were eaten by the Indians. Like the Indians, the Aztecs, Mayans and Incas cultivated squash alongside corn and beans. Squash cultivation was introduced to Europe in the 16th century, before being rapidly adopted by Africa and China.
The squash is a large, ground-creeping plant, related to the melon and cucumber.
