Monk's pepper is a hardy shrub with deciduous foliage and a strong fragrance. Clusters of purple flowers appear in summer, followed by small, cylindrical black berries. The whole plant gives off a powerful, peppery fragrance.
Monk's pepper has a much lighter taste than other peppers, is slightly bitter and not very fragrant. It is often used in Morocco to flavor tagines. It generally accompanies fruit, white meat, poultry and fish.
