Java long pepper is the fruit of a liana native to India, which originally grew wild in the foothills of the Himalayas.
A similar but rarer African species is the long timiz pepper, endemic to Ethiopia, which is very similar but has very different culinary virtues.
Unlike African long pepper, Java long pepper is quite pungent and more like pepper, whereas its African cousin is only fragrant, more like spice.
On the other hand, a very similar variety, grown in southern Cambodia, is harvested red, i.e. when fully ripe, whereas most long peppers, including Java long pepper, are harvested green. This is Kampot red long pepper.
Long pepper is virtually unknown today, yet historically it was the first pepper to be imported into Europe.
