Organic barberry

The wine tree is found in the highlands of northern, eastern and southeastern Iran. They reach heights of 1 to 3 m and have long branches, abundant thorns, denticulate leaves and red berries that form in clusters in spring. Dried berries have culinary and pharmaceutical uses.

In cooking, barberry is added as a flavoring to soups, polows and chicken stuffing. Adding barberry to a variety of soups lends a pleasant acidity, far less strong than that of organic sumac. Chickens are traditionally stuffed with barberry and rice, nuts and other ingredients before being roasted.

In traditional medicine, barberry has properties that help control diarrhea and strengthen the stomach, liver and heart.
