Organic Somali toasted Xawaash

Xawaash, pronounced Hawaash, could be translated as "indispensable" or "essential", which is to say that Xawaash is to Somalia what Ras-el-Hanout is to the Maghreb. Originally from Yemen, Xawaash can be found in all spice blends used to season savory dishes such as meats, stews and soups, as well as in Nubian coffee and tea. Like Ras-el-Hanout or Indian curries, its composition varies from region to region.

My blend comes from a Kenyan friend, near the southern border of Somalia. It's very moderate in pepper so that everyone can enjoy it.
And as always, our spices are toasted and ground to order for added freshness and flavor, one of the hallmarks of Place des Epices, a great blend with bewitching fragrances.

I created this Xawaash on the advice of a Kenyan friend who lives near the southern Somali border. Less peppery than his original recipe, I've adapted it for a wider audience so that you can discover the flavors of this essential blend from southern Somalia.
Composed of a dozen spices, this unique blend is both fine and magnificent on the palate; with its incomparable fragrance, it's the perfect blend for anyone unaccustomed to the pungency of certain blends.

Recipe for a tomato base with Xawaash

Origin: Egypt, France, India, Sri Lanka
Main ingredients: cumin* (42%), coriander* (40%), cardamom*, pepper*, cinnamon*, cloves*, turmeric*. *Organically grown*.
Storage: Toasted and ground to order, 200 days in a dark place.
